Spur Cross Ranch history

The history of Spur Cross Ranch is just as interesting as the present-day nature preserve. In the late 1800s, the land was used for cattle grazing and mining. In the early 1900s, it was purchased by the US Forest Service and used as a dude ranch. Today, Spur Cross Ranch is managed by the Maricopa County Park System, and is open to the public for hiking, wildlife viewing, and picnicking. We have been to and hiked the area many times. While there are so many trails in the Phoenix area Cave Creek and Spur Cross really offer something unique.

Is it hard to hike Spur Cross?

Took the summer off? Just starting? Love steep hikes? Whatever your skill level is Spur Cross offers challenges for all levels. Some of the most popular trails include the Cave Creek Trail, the Elephant Mountain Trail, and the Fossil Springs Trail. You will have opportunities to see a variety of wildlife, including bobcats, rattlesnakes, and javelinas.

There’s all sorts of wildlife
