North Phoenix School Districts Guide

North Phoenix families have more school options than most areas of the Valley. In fact, the district assigned to a home usually decides which schools serve that address. So, this page is a good place to start if you’re researching public schools in Phoenix. Maybe you’re comparing school districts near you, or trying to understand education in Phoenix before buying a home.

Two public school districts cover most of North Phoenix: Deer Valley Unified School District (DVUSD) and Cave Creek Unified School District (CCUSD). Together, they serve elementary, middle, and high schools throughout North Phoenix, Glendale, Anthem, Cave Creek, and Carefree. Below is a quick overview of each district, along with a link to a full guide.

North Phoenix is also home to several charter schools that operate outside the district system. However, this guide focuses on the two public school districts covering the area: DVUSD and CCUSD.

Which school district serves your home?

Boundaries can shift block by block, especially near the edges of a district. Because of this, it’s worth confirming the assigned schools directly with the district if you’re comparing school districts in Phoenix, AZ for a specific address. A local agent can also help you check before deciding.

Deer Valley Unified School District (DVUSD): North Phoenix's Largest District

DVUSD is one of the largest school districts in Phoenix, Arizona. It serves families across North Phoenix, Glendale, Anthem, and nearby communities. Since its founding in 1924, the district has grown to enroll more than 30,000 students. Today, its 40+ campuses cover roughly 150 square miles of Maricopa County.

For homes in central or southern North Phoenix, Glendale, or Anthem, DVUSD is likely the district in play. North Phoenix high schools within the district include Barry Goldwater, Boulder Creek, Deer Valley, Mountain Ridge, and Sandra Day O’Connor. In addition, dozens of elementary and middle schools round out the district.

Both Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) classes are available through DVUSD. The district also offers Career & Technical Education (CTE) programs, along with arts and athletics. Many families choose neighborhood-based elementary schools for their strong community involvement. For current openings, DVUSD’s website publishes enrollment information by school.

Cave Creek Unified School District (CCUSD): Schools Serving Cave Creek and Carefree

CCUSD serves Cave Creek, Carefree, and the northeast section of North Phoenix. Compared to DVUSD, it’s a smaller district, enrolling about 4,800 students across 7 campuses. Still, it covers a wide area of roughly 175 square miles. Like other Phoenix, Arizona school districts, its schools often double as community gathering points.

Overall, CCUSD follows a simple elementary-middle-high school structure. Elementary schools serve PreK through 6th grade with a focus on STEAM. Next, students in grades 7 and 8 attend Sonoran Trails Middle School, recognized as a World Language School of Excellence. Finally, Cactus Shadows High School rounds out the district, offering AP, IB, Dual Enrollment, and CTE options, along with athletics and fine arts.

For a home near Cave Creek or Carefree, CCUSD is likely the district serving that property. The same is true if you’re comparing middle schools in that part of North Phoenix.
