How One North Phoenix School Is Tackling Cell Phone Use to Support Student Success

By Megan Bird: Straight A’s: Advice, Answers & Announcements

Cell phone use in schools has become one of the biggest challenges for students, parents, and teachers in North Phoenix and across the country.

In this post, Assistant Principal Megan Bird shares how her school is addressing the issue, and what families can do to support healthy tech habits.

The Growing Challenge of Cell Phone Use in Schools

As both an educator and a mom here in North Phoenix, one of the biggest challenges I see today is managing student cell phone use at school. When I first began teaching, cell phones weren’t common enough to require strict rules.

Before we begin, did you happen to catch my first blog in this informative Series? I provided some useful and helpful tips to start the school year strong in North Phoenix. And while it’s part of a different Series here in Living North Phoenix, CM also wrote a great article about the best parks to journal, breathe, relax. Check it out. Journaling is a great tool for all ages.

Back to cell phones. Just six years later, they’ve become a daily hurdle that impacts learning, focus, and student well-being. While we fully recognize that cell phones are a major part of life, our goal as educators is to help students stay fully present during class.

That’s why many schools, including mine here in North Phoenix, are adopting clearer guidelines to help minimize distractions.

What Is Our North Phoenix School's Cell Phone Policy?

At my school, we follow a simple policy for cell phones:

  • Phones must be off or on silent during class time, unless a teacher allows them for learning purposes.
  • Phones are not permitted in restrooms or locker rooms to ensure student privacy and safety.
  • Students may use their phones during passing periods and lunch.
  • Earbuds are treated the same as cell phones, as they can easily become a way to disconnect from class.

Other schools may implement stricter policies like “away for the day, gate to gate” or “away during instructional time.” Regardless of the specific policy, the goal is the same: minimize distractions and help students stay focused.

By the way, here is a blog we wrote about the best high schools in Phoenix. Enjoy!

Why School Cell Phone Policies Matter For Student Success

The data is clear: limiting cell phone use improves academic performance and student well-being.

  • A study in Educational Psychology found that students without phones in class scored 6% higher on tests.
  • According to Common Sense Media, teens spend an average of 8.5 hours per day on screens, contributing to poor sleep, anxiety, and lower grades.
  • The Journal of Adolescent Health reports that schools with no-phone policies saw 32% fewer behavior referrals.
  • In our own school, we’ve seen fewer social media conflicts during the school day since adopting consistent policies.

Simply put: fewer distractions create a calmer, more focused, and healthier learning environment.

5 Ways Parents Can Help Manage Student Cell Phone Use

Families play a crucial role in helping students develop responsible habits with technology. Here are a few simple ways you can help at home:

  • Remind your student that phones should not interrupt learning or relationships.
  • Avoid texting or calling your child during school hours (unless it’s passing time or lunch).
  • Contact the front office if you need to reach your student during class time.
  • Establish healthy boundaries at home — for example, charge devices outside the bedroom overnight to encourage better sleep.
  • Keep open conversations about your child’s online experiences, friendships, and any concerns they may have.

A Better Learning Environment Starts With Healthy Tech Habits

When students follow our school’s cell phone policy, it benefits everyone — creating a calmer, more focused, and more connected school community.

Thank you for partnering with us to help students succeed both inside and outside the classroom! See ya on the next blog!
