Community Spotlight: The North Phoenix Neighbor Who Found Adventure Beneath the Ocean — Laurie Weeden

Who Is Laurie Weeden? Meet the North Phoenix Neighbor Who Swam With Manta Rays

Laurie Weeden has called North Phoenix home for more than 56 years, but her sense of adventure has taken her far beyond Arizona. From scuba diving with manta rays and dolphins in Hawaii to skydiving, rock climbing, and horseback riding, her story is a reminder that remarkable experiences often begin with simply saying yes.

Some people spend a lifetime searching for adventure somewhere far away.

Laurie Weeden found hers while never losing sight of home.

A North Phoenix resident for more than 56 years, Laurie has watched the community grow from quiet desert neighborhoods into the vibrant place it is today. Along the way, she’s built a lifetime of unforgettable experiences—from skydiving and rock climbing to ocean kayaking and scuba diving with some of the ocean’s most incredible wildlife.

It’s proof that extraordinary stories can come from ordinary neighbors.

More Than Five Decades in North Phoenix

Few people know North Phoenix quite like Laurie.

She has lived through decades of growth, changing neighborhoods, and the evolution of a community she still proudly calls home.

While many people eventually move away in search of new experiences, Laurie discovered that living in North Phoenix never meant giving up a spirit of adventure.

Whether exploring Arizona’s lakes and mountains or traveling to destinations around the world, she has always embraced opportunities to experience something new.

Today, horses have become one of her greatest passions, but her adventurous spirit remains exactly the same.

A Hobby That Started With One Simple Decision

Laurie’s introduction to scuba diving wasn’t the result of years of planning.

It started with marriage.

Her husband was a certified master diver, and before long, Laurie decided she wanted to experience the underwater world for herself.

“It didn’t take much to convince me I needed to learn how,” she says.

Her certification dives took place at Lake Pleasant, giving her the skills and confidence that would eventually lead to experiences few people ever have.

Sometimes the biggest adventures begin much closer to home than expected.

From Lake Pleasant to Hawaii

Laurie’s husband had another connection that opened the door to even more adventures.

As a former deputy with the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, he knew the owner of Inland Water Divers in Goodyear, who also served as a deputy.

The dive shop regularly organized group dive trips.

When a trip to Hawaii became available, Laurie didn’t hesitate.

What began as a local scuba certification in Arizona soon became an opportunity to explore one of the world’s most famous underwater destinations.

The Night the Manta Rays Arrived

Some experiences are difficult to describe.

Swimming with manta rays is one of them.

The Hawaii excursion included Laurie’s very first night dive.

As darkness settled over the Pacific Ocean, powerful lights attracted tiny plankton toward the surface.

The plankton attracted manta rays.

Divers remained nearly motionless while these enormous, graceful animals glided silently overhead, sometimes passing only inches away.

For Laurie, it was unlike anything she had ever experienced.

“Totally mind blowing,” she recalls.

It quickly became one of the most unforgettable moments of her life.

An Unexpected Encounter With Dolphins

As remarkable as the manta rays were, another dive came surprisingly close.

During a daytime dive, Laurie and her group encountered a large pod of dolphins.

There wasn’t a schedule.

There wasn’t a guarantee.

It was simply one of those unforgettable moments nature occasionally provides.

“There were so many,” she remembers.

Watching dolphins move effortlessly through the open ocean became another memory she’ll never forget—and another reminder that some of life’s best experiences can’t be planned.

Still Finding New Adventures

Although Laurie spends less time scuba diving today, her adventurous mindset hasn’t changed.

Horses have become her newest passion, continuing a lifetime of exploring new interests and embracing opportunities that many people might pass by.

Whether it was learning to scuba dive, stepping onto an airplane for a skydive, climbing rock faces, or paddling across open water, Laurie’s philosophy has remained remarkably consistent:

If something sounds worth experiencing, give it a try.

That outlook has created a lifetime of stories—and continues to inspire everyone around her.
