Welcoming the Class of 2029: Reflections on the First Week of High School

By Megan Bird: Straight A’s: Advice, Answers & Announcements

The first week of school is always a whirlwind—full of excitement, nerves, and lots of new beginnings. As an educator, there’s something incredibly special about witnessing the transformation that begins as freshmen step into high school for the very first time.

For our newest students, this week marks more than just a change in schedule or a new building. It’s the beginning of their high school journey—a time of exploration, growth, and self-discovery.

And for us as teachers, it’s a reminder of how powerful these early days can be in shaping their confidence and mindset for the years ahead.

Starting Strong: Supporting the Freshman Transition

Walking into high school can feel overwhelming. New hallways, new faces, new expectations.  That’s why the first week is all about building connections, creating routines, and fostering a sense of belonging.

And there’s always the cell phone topic…make sure to read our blog about what we are doing to manage cell phones at school.

Whether it’s through icebreaker activities, campus tours, or mentor check-ins, we work hard to create an environment where students feel seen, supported, and safe.

One of the best parts of this week was seeing upperclassmen step into leadership roles, guiding freshmen through scavenger hunts, campus tours, sharing tips on navigating the lunch line, or just offering a friendly “Hey, you’ve got this.” That peer support is invaluable and shows that high school is a team effort.

Creating Routines, Building Confidence

We know that high school brings new levels of academic responsibility and independence.

That’s why we’re intentional about teaching students how to manage their time, ask for help, and stay organized. During the first week, we introduce students to their schedules, help them understand school-wide expectations, and take time to explain resources available from tutoring programs to wellness centers.

It’s easy to underestimate how big a leap this transition can be. But every hallway conversation, every guided practice, and every moment of encouragement builds a foundation that helps students feel more at home. Every member of our staff is there to assist your students on their journey.

What We’re Hearing from Students

What stood out this week were the moments students shared their impressions:

● “It feels big, but I kind of like the freedom.”
● “I was scared to get lost, but now I think I’ve got it.”
● “Everyone’s been really nice. I didn’t expect that.”

Those simple, honest comments remind us that even the smallest acts of kindness or patience can make a huge difference.

Looking Ahead

As we move into week two, we’ll begin diving deeper into coursework, goal setting, and developing the academic habits that will serve students throughout high school. But we’ll also continue to emphasize the human side: relationships, community, and personal growth.

High school is more than grades and tests. It’s a journey of becoming. And we’re so excited to walk that journey with this incredible group of students. Did you see our article about comparing and learning more about AP vs Dual enrollment. Take a peek to make sure you are caught up.

To the class of 2029: you’ve already impressed us. Keep showing up, keep asking questions, and never forget…you belong here.
