Dustin Holm’s transformation was not a career move; it was a call to action. An avid outdoorsman, he loved Arizona’s beauty. However, his passion turned to dismay when he discovered a colossal pile of illegal garbage near the Maricopa Trail at Deadman’s Wash. Soon after, an abandoned boat polluted New River. The wreckage was overwhelming, but he refused to look away.
We are proud to continue our Together Toward Tomorrow Series highlighting the amazing things Dustin and his team are doing. Did you catch our previous highlight about Jon Taylor and how he is transforming communities?
He issued an immediate plea to the community. The response was electric. Twenty determined volunteers mobilized instantly. With aid from local businesses, they attacked the dump sites, hauling four truckloads of refuse from the desert. This success was addictive, sparking a deeper commitment. The “cleanup bug” had bitten him, and Dustin realized his mission was far grander than his day job.
This grassroots victory led to the formal creation of Don’t Dump in Our Desert. This volunteer group is now a tireless, uncompromising force against illegal dumping.
The organization runs 5 to 6 massive cleanups every year during Arizona’s cooler seasons. They unite hundreds of local residents in a direct action campaign.
The dedication metrics are monumental:
In one single operation, they extracted over 400 abandoned tires. This prevented a toxic eyesore from degrading the ecosystem for decades.
What makes Don’t Dump in Our Desert truly extraordinary is its self-reliant funding model. Crucially, the organization is not a 501(c)(3). They firmly refuse public donations or government funding.
Instead, Dustin Holm personally bankrolls the entire operation through his successful business, North Valley Junk Removal.
Every dollar—covering heavy equipment, supplies, and high disposal fees—is a direct, personal donation from Dustin. This unwavering commitment is not a side project. Rather, it is a self-funded crusade to restore Arizona’s natural heritage.
Dustin Holm and his army of dedicated volunteers show us how one person’s clear vision, backed by fierce personal sacrifice and galvanized community spirit, can forge a profound environmental impact. Ultimately, they are restoring a piece of Arizona’s soul.
