Straight A’s: Advice, Answers & Announcements

As an educator, and now an administrator, for over 25 years, being at school truly is my favorite place to be!

There’s just something magical about the start of a new school year: the crisp point of a fresh Ticonderoga pencil (if you know, you know), a clean pink pearl eraser, composition notebooks, a new backpack, and a lunchbox ready to go. These simple things still bring me so much joy!

Reestablish Routines Before School Starts

While summer is just beginning, it’s never too early to start thinking ahead and preparing for the upcoming
school year. Depending on the grade your child is entering, there may be new routines, responsibilities,
and goals to plan for. Here are a few things to keep in mind.

Get Involved, Stay Connected

Students who participate in school activities like sports, clubs, arts, and leadership tend to feel more connected socially and emotionally and perform better academically. Encourage them to get involved and try something new this year.

Families can stay engaged and connected by checking in regularly, following school social media accounts, attending school events, and joining the parent-teacher organization.

Communicate Early and Often

If challenges arise, whether academic, social, or personal, please reach out. We’re partners in your student’s success, and staying connected helps us respond quickly and effectively. Middle and high school students are learning independence, but they still need support.

Remind them that asking for help is a strength, not a weakness. Whether it’s academic concerns, mental health, or college/career planning, we have counselors, teachers, administrators and staff ready to help.

Final Thoughts: We’re All in This Together

If you haven’t noticed already, I absolutely love everything about education, but most of all, I love the
students! Every educator holds a special place in their heart for the young people they serve.

Our greatest joy is to guide, support, and encourage students so they can have the best possible school
experience and reach for their biggest dreams.

Remember, we’re all on the same team, and together, we form the village that supports your student every step of the way.

Committed with heart and purpose,

Megan Bird
