- Winner #7
Meet North Phoenix artist Anna, whose journey from beginner painter to mural artist has transformed homes, backyards, and public spaces through creativity, perseverance, and a passion for bringing ideas to life.
Anna is a North Phoenix artist, mural painter, and single mom whose creative journey began with simple canvas paintings and evolved into large-scale murals throughout Arizona. Today, she creates custom artwork that transforms ordinary walls into vibrant, one-of-a-kind spaces while inspiring others to embrace creativity.
Everyone starts somewhere.
For Anna, that “somewhere” wasn’t especially impressive.
She’ll be the first to admit her earliest paintings weren’t very good.
In fact, she laughs about them today.
“Shhhh, don’t tell—they were awful!”
Most people would have quit after those first attempts.
Anna kept painting.
Years later, she’s creating custom murals, transforming block walls into backyard masterpieces, and helping homeowners bring their ideas to life across North Phoenix and beyond.
It’s proof that talent often begins with persistence.
A Creative Spirit Balancing Everyday Life
Like many artists, Anna balances creativity with the responsibilities of everyday life.
She’s a full-time professional.
A single mom raising two wonderful kids.
A proud dog owner.
And in the hours between work and family, she builds something entirely her own through custom artwork and mural painting.
For Anna, every project begins the same way.
With someone sharing an idea.
Then together, that idea becomes something people can enjoy every single day.
“It’s always such an amazing feeling to make someone’s vision come to life,” she says.
That simple philosophy continues to shape every piece she creates.
Where It All Began
Anna’s journey into painting started during a very personal chapter of her life.
While dating a service member who was deployed overseas, she found herself searching for a creative outlet.
Picking up a paintbrush seemed like a good way to pass the time.
The results?
Not exactly gallery-worthy.
Looking back, she openly jokes about how rough those early paintings were.
But instead of putting the brushes away, she kept practicing.
Each canvas became another opportunity to improve.
Over time, those small improvements quietly added up into something much bigger.
Discovering the Power of Murals
A major turning point came when Anna was invited to participate in the annual Coronado Neighborhood Mural Festival on Oak Street in Phoenix.
Working on an entire wall instead of a canvas completely changed the way she approached art.
She discovered something many mural artists eventually experience.
Once you’ve painted something that fills an entire building…
Small canvases never quite feel the same again.
As Anna puts it:
“Once you paint a mural, it’s hard to paint small again. Seriously! Go big or go home!!!”
That experience opened the door to a new creative direction—one that continues defining her work today.
Transforming Everyday Spaces
Anna doesn’t simply paint murals.
She transforms spaces people see every day.
Blank backyard walls become colorful underwater scenes.
Pool areas gain sea turtles that appear to swim across concrete.
Ordinary block walls become personalized works of art that reflect the personalities of the families who live there.
Her goal isn’t simply decoration.
It’s creating something meaningful that homeowners can enjoy for years.
Every project is different because every client’s vision is different.
That’s one of the things she enjoys most about her work.
No two walls ever tell exactly the same story.
Creativity Through Persistence
One of the biggest lessons from Anna’s journey has nothing to do with painting techniques.
It’s about consistency.
The artists people admire rarely begin as experts.
They simply continue long after many others decide to stop.
Anna often reflects on those early paintings with humor because they remind her how far she’s come.
Her story encourages others to embrace the learning process instead of fearing imperfect beginnings.
Every mural she creates today exists because she didn’t give up when her work wasn’t yet where she wanted it to be.
Why This Matters to North Phoenix
Communities become more vibrant because of people willing to share their creativity.
Artists like Anna don’t simply add color to buildings.
They help transform neighborhoods.
Public art creates landmarks.
Backyard murals create gathering places.
Custom artwork turns ordinary spaces into personal expressions of the people who live there.
It’s another reminder that North Phoenix is filled with talented individuals quietly making the community more beautiful every day.
A Neighbor Who Brings Walls to Life
Anna’s story isn’t just about becoming an artist.
It’s about believing that improvement comes through persistence.
From paintings she now laughs about to murals that completely transform homes and outdoor spaces, her creative journey continues inspiring others to think bigger—and maybe even paint bigger too.
Sometimes the most remarkable transformations begin with one brushstroke.
