Living North Phoenix

Best North Phoenix Mexican Restaurant?

Love Mexican food? Good vibes? Margaritas?

We’re back this week with another Community Member Blog. And this week is from Cheari who visited The Mexicano, a relatively newer North Phoenix restaurant from famed restaurateur, Chef Joey.

North Phoenix Mexican Restaurant

My girlfriends and I wanted to get together with our boys to kick off the end of school and beginning of summer. So we decided that we we wanted someplace with an upbeat atmosphere and great food. One of the girls said we absolutely had to go to the Mexicano in North Phoenix.

I had driven by here many times, it’s on Cactus and Tatum, and didn’t realize it would become a top choice for Mexican food!

Live Music Too & A Margarita Bar?

We went on a Friday night and the atmosphere was very lively with great music! They have a large bar and offer happy hour daily from 11am-5:30pm. We were seated on the patio which has misters so kept it nice and cool and were served chips and salsa right away.

I had a house margarita which can be frozen but I chose mine on the rocks–delicioso! One of my friends got La Reyna which has hibiscus and pamplemmousse (grapefruit) and that one was very flavorful and a bit tart. They also have a Build-your-own margarita bar and you can choose from 30 toppings, lots of fruit and candy.

Entertainment!

While we were waiting for our appetizers a girl came out with torches and started swallowing fire! It was so fun to watch, at a distance. 😊

For appetizers my son and I split the Carnitas Tamale Cakes, it comes with 2 and is a moist creamy corn cake that is crispy on the bottom, piled with tender shredded pork carnitas, crema, avocado, and queso fresco on top. It was amazing!

We also got the Queso Fundido which was served in a hot pan and was a blend of melty Mexican cheeses, chorizo, queso fresco, and roasted poblanos. This was served with warm flour tortillas and was very creamy and decadent. The peppers really made this dish for me!

For dinner I had a birria taco and a beer battered shrimp taco with a side of rice. The birria was a crispy corn taco filled with very moist and flavorful shredded beef with queso fresco and a side of consume for dipping.

The shrimp taco came with 2 very large fried shrimp with queso fresco. The shrimp was perfectly cooked, crunchy on the outside and very tender inside.

It was fresh and delicious!

A Churro Cart?

For dessert we ordered the Churro Cart. These came with 6 freshly made hot churros rolled in sugar with 3 dipping sauces: chocolate, caramel and tres leches. They were incredible, crispy outside, soft in the middle. They were great on their own but the caramel sauce was my favorite. My son loved the chocolate!

The service here was great and the servers were very friendly and upbeat! This is some of the best Mexican food I have ever had and I’ve lived in Arizona for 30 plus years!

The Mexicano is located in what has been referred to as “The Magical Zip code.” It is called that because of its location: Scottsdale mailing address with Phoenix taxes, large lots (for many homes), good schools and so much more. Want to be in the magical zip code? Search all available homes for sale in 85254 here.

The Mexicano and 85254 are also located to the brand new PV Mall/development. A list is always subject to change and updates but awhile back I wrote about some other North Phoenix must try restaurants.

But if you are looking for Mexican food in North Phoenix, it might be worth checking out The Mexicano. Not only does the food sound good, but you also get an experience. Let us know what you think if you have been, or plan on going.
